Investigating Echo Lake

Disney-MGM Studios is the location of our latest Disney Scene Investigation on this week's edition of the WDW Radio Show. Inspired by the Echo Park neighborhood in Los Angeles, the Echo Lake area of the Studios is filled with details that pay homage to Hollywood's bygone days as well as numerous classic films and the sometimes infamous architectural style known as "California Crazy." Tune in for a fun and very informative stroll around this very interesting lakeside district of the Walt Disney World resort.

One of my favorite details in MGM is Eddie Valiant's office on the second level of Echo Lake. The Roger Rabbit-shaped hole in his venetian blinds used to be, if you recall, an actual hole cut in the show prop. It broke a few years ago and they replaced it with a generic set of blinds with a black Roger cutout over top which is in place today. And thus effectively died one of MGM's best details. Bah.

Getting the chance to enjoy WDW Radio Show 28 (August 19, 2007) a couple of days late, and I had one observation/addendum to add to Lou's & your endorsement & acceptance of the Sorceror Mickey hat at the soon-to-become-Hollywood Studios (approximately 44 minutes into the episode): while I agree with most of your positive statements about the hat, MOST ESPECIALLY because it may be what ultimately blocked the wrecking ball from the Chinese Theater facade (whew!) -- my own personal problem with its status as a park icon...
...is that it's...
Not a ride.
Not a show.
Not an exhibit.
Not an attraction.
Not even a utilitarian piece of mood-setting aesthetic.

It's a gift shop.

It's a gift shop AND a park's fundamental icon in one.
That particular piece of symbolism is (to me) disquieting.

I like the hat itself just fine (although, yes: given my druthers I'd prefer to be able to see the theater).
I'd APPROVE of the hat if it were... I dunno... meet & greet space... shade for some benches & a water fountain... housing for some park/movie history plaques/posters/etc. ...
...but NOT yet ANOTHER gift shop. Not right THERE.
PLEASE: not as the park's icon!

To me it's a bad signal coming from the top of the company down, and as such I'd rather be without it.
Know what I mean?
